Howto play Ogg Vorbis on your Nokia N73 phone
Nokia N73 is described as a multimedia phone, but has ironically not support for the common Ogg Vorbis audio format. The audio format that by many is said to replace the old (but still popular) MP3 format. Even though Ogg Vorbis is free to both use and implement for everyone, few hardware vendors have incorporated support for this format into their players. But luckily, where the industry fail, there is allways communities popping up on the internet to fix their mistakes. And this time a player called OggPlay comes to save us. It is a player for the Symbian operatingsystem, used by many mobile devices.
Nokia N73 use Symbian S60 Release 3. Although I have only done this on this specific phone, this howto can be used on many other phones. OggPlay says on their website that this version of OggPlay can be used on the following phones:
Nokia 3250, Nokia 5500, Nokia E60, Nokia E70, Nokia N61, Nokia N71, Nokia N73, Nokia N80, Nokia N91, Nokia N92 and Nokia N93.
To follow these steps you will need a Nokia N73 phone (or any of the others listed above), a computer with Windows and Nokia PC Suite installed and a USB cabel for the phone (or you can use bluetooth, but I didn’t have that on my computer).
- Go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=86146.
- Download the file S60V3 MMF 1.70 (OggPlayS60V3_1_70.ZIP) and extract the file.
- Remember that this is a betaversjon, please read the release_note.txt file before proceding.
- Start Nokia PC Suite, choose Install applications and browse to OggPlayS60V3_1_70.SIS and click on the arrow to install it to the phone.
- Press Yes on the phone to let the application be installed.
- The release notes for this release says that you need to restart your phone after the installation, so we better do that (turn it off and back on again).
- Now you will find OggPlay under Programs on your phone, start it now.
- In OggPlay, press Options and Find new files, it will then search your phone for audiofiles.
- When the search is done, press OK and you have an Ogg Vorbis player in your pocket
On the front display, where you have the icons for contacts, messages and so on, I replaced the icon for the default audioplayer with OggPlay. To do that, follow these steps:
- Go to Tools - Settings - Phone - Standby mode.
- Choose Active standby apps.
- Open the shortcut that says Music player.
- In the list choose OggPlay.
Note that altough this howto is for the Symbian S60 Release 3 operatingsystem, OggPlay can be used for many other Symbian operatingsystems. Visit OggPlay’s website (http://symbianoggplay.sourceforge.net/) for more information about wich phones you can install OggPlay. I will guess that versions of OggPlay for other Symbian versions have a similar installation procedure as the one I have described here.

I didn’t have that problem when I installed it, but with a little search I found this, maybe that helps:

I recently updated the firmware on my N37, after the update all 3rd party programs was restored, except OggPlay. So I had to reinstall it, but got the error message “Expired certificate”. I’m not sure if that was the same error as mentioned in the comments above, but I found a way to work around it.
It’s quite easy actually, what do you do when you try to install something and you got a expired error message? You put the clock back in time. So I tried, and it worked, I set the clock 1 year back, installed, and changed the clock back again.
Too bad, but the OggPlay project doesn’t seem very active, hopefully they will wake up again.
(The expired certificate is probably why OggPlay was not restored after the firmware upgrade)
